I stole an ass hat during the MindTouch white elephant party. It’s pretty awesome.

It’s been a great Christmas. Ashby was the big winner this year with so many gifts it finally became a chore for her to open them all. It wasn’t Tara and I responsible for this, rather it was her grandparents. I got some new underwear and socks. Sweet! One of my most favorite gifts this year was from my brother-in-law, Toby. Check it:
Awesomeness! He recites Bible passages when you press his back. This is from One2Believe.com. I want every toy this company makes. I am confused why the site has Samson wrestling Goliath though. Weird. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if there was a religious action figure series? Buddha, Abraham, Zorasta, Jesus, Mohammed, Joseph Smith, Bahá’u'lláh, etc… Wouldn’t you want to collect every one? Check out the full Jesus photo set.
As is our tradition for Christmas, I made Beef Wellington with Brenda. We made a walnut ham pate’ as an alternative to the liver pate’ to go with the mushroom duxelle that is used to insulate the tenderloin and I made a mushroom bordelaise with a mix of oyster and button mushrooms. Brenda (my mo-in-law) prepared twice baked potatoes, creamed spinach and a broccoli salad. Delicious.

I spent three+ hours baking yesterday. Ashby sat on the counter and helped out. We made Christmas treats for he neighbors. Most of which have brought Ashby gifts and treats in the last week. Being the only child in the neighborhood she’s a bit of a celebrity. We made playdoh cookies and bark chocolate.
I’m not a fan of the bark chocolate. Too sweet. The playdoh cookies are awesome though.
After baking we headed to 3606 Garrison Street in Point Loma. I can’t describe the lengths to which this block has gone to create a Christmas wonderland. Animatronics, lights galore even a real life Santa was hired on at one house! It’s bordering on obscene. I have never seen anything like this. The block has about 6-8 houses on it that have gone all out. Some houses have so many lights it is nearly daylight.
The most bizarre/amazing feature of some of these houses were the displays some had built into their windows. One house had a dozen window boxes with animatronics reindeer, Santa, Disney characters, manger scenes, etc… One of the "window" displays was actually bay windows into what must have been their dining room and the entire room was turned into a massive animatronic Santa’s workshop!
If you’re into Christmas or Christmas lights and displays make your way to 3606 Garrison Street in Point Loma. Say hello if you see us, we plan to visit more than once.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holi…wait…holy &#$%, wtf? LMAO…yes, I know this photo is hysterically funny. Well, you haven’t seen anything because this is only one of the photos Roy had taken to send out for Christmas cards. If you would like a Christmas Card from Roy he’s willing to mail you one. Roy is MindTouch’s lead developer and founder of Tabulas. Yes, this guy is a lot of fun to work with. Check out that sweater! The sweater and scarf were actually borrowed from Guerric, the latest addition to MindTouch’s development team, who purchased it for use at a Christmas Sweater party he attended.
Seriously though, Happy Holidays from MindTouch. We really appreciate all of your support this last year. To show this we have some very cool new products we’re releasing in the beginning of the year (most of you are probably already aware of one of these). 2008 is already shaping up to be a break out year for MindTouch and this is entirely attributable to you, the community. Thanks for blogging, talking, providing testimonials, giving praise, translating, filing bugs, writing install guides, submitting code patches, writing extensions, hosting user conferences (you can even invite us if you like
), buying support, and yes even complaining about Deki Wiki. Because of all these actions by so many of you MindTouch has become the most popular vendor backed wiki. Sincerely, thanks.
Please continue to provide your feedback in the forums. Good, bad, or otherwise. Also, you should know there is a section to author specs at the wiki. Yes, really you can spec out a feature, we will review it, we have implemented many of these. If you review the release notes of each product release you’ll notice the community is the predominate driver of the product releases. This is your product, we’re the facilitators. Keep the goodness coming.
As you might suspect, given my affinity for wikis, I’ve a personal wiki. This is running at the un-announced shared hosted site that I won’t mention by name, but I will provide a link to it. I plan to do a complete write-up about this at the work blog in the new year when we announce the service, but by then this gorgeous Christmas theme Damien built will be obsolete. I’m using the Pro version of this service, which gives me 10GB of storage, a custom domain, and custom HTML regions that allow me to injects ads, widgets, Google analytics, whatever into the site. It’s a killer service. I use it a lot for taking notes, sharing files, aggregating content in one view from all over and for keeping private communications. The Pro version is only $60/year. The free version is ad-free and limited to 100MB of storage, but I think we’re going to drop that down to 15MB of storage. I suspect this service will cut into some of the competitors’ market in the shared hosted/software as a service wiki offerings that are charging several thousands of dollars for a weaker feature set, user limitations, and quite frankly an inferior wiki. This is the best damn wiki you can find, you can do mashups, you can run your own ads, and you’ve got the richest enterprise wiki feature set available. For free…or $60/year.
We’ve intentionally kept this service quiet since the Holidays crept up on us while we were still working out some last minute kinks in the service. Announcing it now would be pointless because it would just get lost in the Holidays. Moreover, we’ve still got some minor kinks to get around and we’re already getting a lot of traffic to the site just through the word of mouth of the community. In fact, we’re all pleasantly surprised by the number of Pro registrations we’re getting a day. I’ve seen lots of churches, schools, Universities, orgs, and some businesses going Pro in the last few weeks.
This wiki service is a great extension to a blog because it provides a fully customizable, persistent and collaborative authoring tool. For example, let’s assume you blog about online marketing. Well, your blog is a tool for you to publish time sensitive information on the subject. However, frequently there is the need for a more persistent information architecture. Also, the wiki can provide a medium for building a community around your blog by which you allow your audience to participate in the conversation in a more meaningful way than allowed by comments. It’s important to note that this particular service also allows you to easily and automatically aggregate content from all over the Internet on particular topics. Moreover, you can easily create rich application mashups to serve as interactive extensions to your blog posts. These can include interactive maps, charts, graphs, forms, countless widgets, flickr, news feeds, video, search tools, and more… I’m certain it will soon be the case that all bloggers with a community they’re looking to engage will have a wiki extension to their blog sites to facilitate a richer engagement with their audience and to provide persistent and more robust information sharing.

Ashby turned one year old on Saturday, January 6. It is hard to believe she’s already one. I think back to those first three months…man…that was scary. Things are much more stable now. We’ve had so many milestones already. She got her harness off for her hip dysplasia and report that her hips are normal at about three months, which was a huge relief. Then at eight months my fears of SIDS ended because research shows SIDS drops way off at that age and is no longer an issue at one year. She crawled. She signed for the first time. She’s spoken her first word: ‘dadadada’. She led us on a wild goose chase to determine why she’s anemic. She’s walked (with the aid of a walker toy). And more. I’m glad she’s sturdier now. She’s a lot more fun now that I can ‘rastle’ with her.
For Ashby’s birthday weekend the wonderful and very talented Jj Killins (our neighbor we will surely miss after we move) took photos of Ashby again. She’s amazing. For the full photo set click “Ashby’s One Year Set” below. Tara and Brenda also took Ashby to Target to get more photos taken. I can’t stand these places though because you don’t get the digital copies. What’s the point? I want nothing to do with that; although, the photographer took some surprisingly nice shots. I prefer Jj’s though photos though. I know most photographers aren’t like Jj (meaning they don’t provide digital copies), but it’s just nonsense.
On Ashby’s birthday she also went to the playground, one of her most favorite things to do. I stayed at home and work. Partially because I have so much crap to do, but also because I knew if I went I would steal the show from Brenda (Tara’s mom) who doesn’t have much time left before we move. When Ashby went down for her nap Tara and Brenda did a great job decorating the kitchen. After Ashby got up we sang her happy birthday, took a ton of photos, and let her taste cake for the first time. Tara got a cake from Byerlys, this awesome grocery store chain they have in Minnesota. It’s got a great meats and cheese section. This is where I got the four different sashimi grade fish for our New Years’ Eve sushi night. Around Christmas time they have a pianist. The place is all carpeted. And they give a free cake for first birthdays! The place rules. Anyhow, Ashby stuck her finger in the cake, didn’t know what to do, I put it in her mouth, and she jerked her head back as if her finger had an electriccharge. She paused, stuck her finger in again, tasted, and concluded this was some good stuff.
Tara and I plan on getting Ashby an aquarium once we move to San Diego; so, we didn’t really get her much for Christmas. However the in-laws gave her a hippo-walker/ride-on toy that Ashby promptly stood behind and charged about the house with. Also, she received a Leap Frog console that communicates with the DVD player. She checked it out for the first time today and seemed to understand she was manipulating the TV. I’m not yet sure how successful that one will be.
