“Just apologize to the American people and to the families of the troops for not doing your job four years ago. We wouldn’t be in this war if you had done your job. Come on. Just admit it. Just apologize to the American people.”

The corrupting effects of corporations on the American political system, the media, and society is becoming more and more evident.

Demand an apology from CNN for Dr. Sanjay Gupta’s biased report on ‘SiCKO’ and for helping the Bush administration lie us into a pointless war.

Feel free to use this letter by copy/pasting it:

I demand an apology and a correction of the record for the biased and ridiculous report provided by Dr. Sanjay Gupta regarding Moore’s movie “Sicko”. Moreover, I demand an apology for the concerted effort to marginalize people like Moore for professing the truth; specifically as Blitzer did regarding 9/11 and the war in Iraq. If CNN refuses this and continues to intentionally and willfully mislead the American people I will boycott CNN and its sponsors.

CNN and Democracy Now! Podcasts

Have you watched the CNN podcast In Case You Missed It? You need to check this out if you haven’t. It’s obscenely B-A-D. I guess this is CNN’s attempt to be cool and hip. They’ve got video with a crappy techno-beat layered over it and minimal commentary. Then each transition has one of those brilliant swish noises. Maybe this works with the under 25 demographic. I watched one episode, was awed by how bad it was, and watched parts of a couple other episodes just to see if maybe it was some sick joke. Turns out they actually produce that crap.

On the opposite end of the spectrum you have Democracy Now!, which offers audio and video podcasts. This is without a doubt the best news source I’ve found. I recommend it highly. Another personal favorite is On the Media, which is a weekly program.

I got this email today. I was rather offended. Here is the original email:

Subject: Catagory “5″ Blizzard Emergency

This is an actually weather bulletin from a county emergency manager just outside a small town in western North Dakota after a recent snow storm.

WEATHER BULLETIN

Up here in the Northern Plains we just recovered from a Historic event — may I even say a “Weather Event” of “Biblical Proportions” — with a historic blizzard of up to 44″ inches of snow and winds to 90 MPH that broke trees in half, knocked down utility poles, stranded hundreds of motorists in lethal snow banks, closed ALL roads, isolated scores of communities and cut power to 10′s of thousands.

FYI:

George Bush did not come….
FEMA did nothing….
No one howled for the government…
No one blamed the government.
No one even uttered an expletive on TV…
Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton did not visit.
Our Mayor’s did not blame Bush or anyone else.
Our Governor did not blame Bush or anyone else either.
CNN, ABC, CBS, FOX, or NBC did not visit – or report on this category 5 snow storm.
Nobody demanded $2,000 debit cards…..
No one asked for a FEMA Trailer House….
No one looted…
Nobody – I mean Nobody demanded the government do something.
Nobody expected the government to do anything either.
No Larry King, No Bill O’Rielly, No Oprah, No Chris Mathews and No Geraldo Rivera.
No Shaun Penn, No Barbara Striesand, No Hollywood types to be found.
And
Nope, we just melted the snow for water.
Sent out caravans of SUV’s to pluck people out of snow engulfed cars.
The truck drivers pulled people out of snow banks and didn’t ask for a penny.
Local restaurants made food and the police and fire departments delivered it to the snow bound families.
Families took in the stranded people – total strangers.
We Fired up wood stoves.
Broke out coal oil lanterns or Coleman lanterns.
We put on an extra layers of clothes because up here it is “Work or Die”.
We did not wait for some affirmative action government to get us out of a mess created by being immobilized by a welfare program that trades votes for sittin’ at home’ checks.
Even though a Category “5″ blizzard of this scale has never fallen this early…we know it can happen and how to deal with it ourselves.
“In my many travels, I have noticed that once one gets north of about 48 degrees North Latitude, 90% most of the world’s social problems evaporate.”
It does seem that way, at least to me.. I hope this gets passed on.
Maybe,, SOME people will get the message,, The world Does not owe you a living….

—–My Response—–

No, I did not enjoy this.

Anyone who compares a blizzard, regardless of the magnitude, to a Category 4 or 5 hurricane simply doesn’t know what a hurricane is. Let’s not even take into account the tragic flooding of unprecedented proportions that hit a city the size of New Orleans. Not even Fargo/Moorehead, which seems to require FEMA assistance every seven years is remotely close to the size or splendor of New Orleans. Nope, not even the entire population along the banks of the Red River, which seems to require FEMA assistance every so often, which is rewarded with assistance from FEMA and the federal government every so often without delay, without question, without the rest of the United States suggesting that maybe they shouldn’t rebuild their dinky little towns along a river which, generally speaking, flood the towns every seven years.

The city of New Orleans alone has a population of 1.2 Million people. That’s just New Orleans. If you count the impacted cities you’re well over 2 Million people. Now, there are estimates that about 60% of the population evacuated. So, let’s say that approximately 1.2 Million people of the 2 Million (probably less) were trapped in the impacted area out of power, under water, out of water, starving, begging for help from the government that they have invested their tax dollars in. No one came for over a week. Thousands died as a result of this. North Dakota has a total population of 642,200 people. That’s the entire state. Tens of thousands without power? Gee…wow. Try over 1.2 million people without power, water, food. Melt snow? Gee, that’s great. There was no water for these people in New Orleans. Interestingly enough, FEMA had truck loads of bottled water they didn’t truck in. Why? Ask FEMA. It took them more than a week. Why didn’t these people leave? Well, like I said they were trapped. The military and police blocked the bridges and did NOT allow them out of New Orleans. Unless, in many cases, you were white. I’ll not even address the absurdity of ‘looting’ other than to say that this was sparse and in almost all cases was out of necessity for survival.

The first time I visited to New Orleans was in 1984. I was 9 years old and my family and I were there for the World’s Fair. I fell in love with the city and the great state of Louisiana. The culture, the music, the people, the spirit of the city…words can’t describe it. My wife and I, before we were married would again visit New Orleans to enjoy the great food and incredible music. In 1999 we were married in New Orleans’ French Quarter. Some day, I would like to live in the New Orleans of my memory. However, I fear the New Orleans of my memory is gone. Of course, neither the author of this email, nor those who resend it have any idea what I’m talking about.

The world does not ‘owe you a living,’ but we are Americans, we are citizens of the greatest and richest country in the world, more importantly we are human beings and we do owe our fellow man a little decency. The fact that these people’s tax dollars fund FEMA and our federal government just as much, if not more (in sheer numbers), than those in North Dakota who receive federal assistance when the Red River floods aside, let’s show them a little human decency and care for their lives and well being.

“In my many travels, I have noticed that once one gets north of about 48 degrees North Latitude, 90% most of the world’s social problems evaporate.” Well, this person clearly hasn’t traveled far from their “small town in western North Dakota.” I have, and I know better. The social problems found in the north are the same as those in the south. I don’t care if THIS gets passed along. Whether someone gets the message or not, I don’t care. It’s not my purpose to ‘teach’ others my perspective about how I or they or we are better than someone else because we live in some place rather than another or because we have a different color skin. On a final note, it’s pretty clear to me that this has some pretty racist overtones.

No, I did not enjoy this.

James Doohan, 'Star Trek's' Scotty, dead

CNN

Doohan died at 5:30 a.m. (1330 GMT) at his Redmond, Washington, home with his wife of 28 years, Wende, at his side, Los Angeles agent and longtime friend Steve Stevens said. The cause of death was pneumonia and Alzheimer’s disease, he said.

The Canadian-born Doohan fought in World War II and was wounded during the D-Day invasion, according to the StarTrek.com Web site. He was enjoying a busy career as a character actor when he auditioned for a role as an engineer in a new space adventure on NBC in 1966. A master of dialects from his early years in radio, he tried seven different accents.

When the series ended in 1969, Doohan found himself typecast as Montgomery Scott, the canny engineer with a burr in his voice. In 1973, he complained to his dentist, who advised him: “Jimmy, you’re going to be Scotty long after you’re dead. If I were you, I’d go with the flow.”

“I took his advice,” said Doohan, “and since then everything’s been just lovely.”

Rest in peace, James Doohan. I never knew you faked that accent.

Forget Hybrids, Forget H2

CNN

(CNN) — A Korean company has created a car engine that runs on air.

The engine, which powers a pneumatic-hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), works alongside an electric motor to create the power source.

The system eliminates the need for fuel, making the PHEV pollution-free.

Cheol-Seung Cho, of Energine Corporation, told CNN the system is controlled by a computer inside the car, which instructs the compressed-air engine and electric motor what to do.

Filesharing Goes to Supreme Court

CNN

WASHINGTON (CNN) – High-tech reached the nation’s high court Tuesday as Supreme Court justices questioned whether online file-sharing networks could be held accountable for copyright infringement.

At issue is whether the entertainment industry can continue aggressively pursuing not only those who illegally download copyrighted songs, movies and photos, but also those who sell file-sharing software and services.

A San Francisco-based federal appeals court in August ruled those file-sharing companies were not responsible, since their products do not directly tell users where they can download protected material.

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) Studios sued the two makers of file-sharing software, Grokster and StreamCast Networks, claiming it has lost billions of dollars in revenue from the illegal distribution of its property, and has had to spend millions more developing anti-theft technology and prosecuting offenders.

Just remember this, nobody sues the gun manufacturer when their loved one is murdered. Just because something can be used to break the law, does not mean it will.

Sony offers pizza feature for hungry gamers

CNN

NEW YORK (AP) — Sony has built the ability to order pizza into its latest online multiplayer game. Type the command “/pizza” while playing Everquest II, a fantasy game with 330,000 active players, and get the Pizza Hut Web site, where you can place orders for delivery.

Chris Kramer, spokesman for Sony Online Entertainment, said he believes this is the first time a game accepts orders for real-world items.

Sony plans to integrate the pizza function more tightly into the game, so players can charge pizza to their monthly game subscription bill.

Now we never have to leave the house! I can already see parents suing Sony further for getting their poor children addicted to evercrack. “Billy used to get up and eat, now he doesnt have to”. Sign of things to come? This could get interesting though if it catches on in other games. Playing the Sims2 and you purchase a big screen tv? Hope you pressed the correct ‘buy this’ button…

Smart glass reacts to the weather

CNN

LONDON, England (CNN) — Scientists in London have created a coating for glass, which reflects or absorbs heat, depending on the temperature outside.

Professor of inorganic and materials chemistry, Ivan Parkin, and Troy Manning, both of the chemistry department at University College London, developed the intelligent window coating as part of Mr Manning’s PhD studies.

The thin film is made out of a material called vanadium dioxide, and it undergoes a change depending on the weather outside.

Teacher accused of instructing students on bomb-making

CNN

ORLANDO, Florida (AP) — A high school chemistry teacher was arrested after students claimed he taught his class how to make a bomb, authorities said.

David Pieski, 42, used an overhead projector in class to give instructions in making explosives to students at Freedom High School, including advising them to use an electric detonator to stay clear from the blast, an Orange County sheriff’s arrest report said.

In Pieski’s classroom in Orlando, authorities found a book labeled “Demo,” which includes the chemical breakdown for a powerful explosive, the arrest report said.

Actually, he was “charged with possessing or discharging a destructive device and culpable negligence”, NOT teaching students how to make a bomb. A fact that seems to be missing from all headlines I have seen. This is simply not true ( he was detonating these devices on golf courses). But way to go media, keep saying that he was arrested for teaching. Lets get everybody on the mindset that knowledge is bad. Everyone knows that too much information is never good. Why do you hate our troops?
This bothers me.

So-called U.S. hostage appears to be toy

CNN

CNN) — A photograph posted on an Islamist Web site appears to be that of an action figure and not a U.S. soldier being held hostage.

Liam Cusack, the marketing coordinator for Dragon Models USA, said the figure pictured on the Web site is believed to be “Special Ops Cody,” a military action figure the company manufactured in late 2003.

Massive cow manure mound burns for third month

CNN

MILFORD, Nebraska (AP) — Urban dwellers who enjoy dining on filet mignon at five-star restaurants would probably just as soon not know about David Dickinson’s dilemma.

Bad for the appetite, you know.

But Dickinson, who makes his living in the cattle business, has an environmental problem on his hands that is vexing state officials: a 2,000-ton pile of burning cow manure.

Dickinson owns and manages Midwest Feeding Co. about 20 miles west of Lincoln, which takes in as many as 12,000 cows at a time from farmers and ranchers and fattens them for market.

Byproducts from the massive operation resulted in a dung pile measuring 100 feet long, 30 feet high and 50 feet wide that began burning about two months ago and continues to smolder despite Herculean attempts to douse it.

Not at all science or technology related, but too funny not to post. The picture in the article begs the question, is that a mountain or is that the pile? I think nebraska is rather flat…
