Lead (Pb) is Good, Global Warming Doesn't Exist

Some snippets from a recent Wired article.

Two federal agencies are investigating whether the Bush administration tried to block government scientists from speaking freely about global warming and censor their research, a senator said Wednesday.

Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-New Jersey) said he was informed that the inspectors general for the Commerce Department and NASA had begun “coordinated, sweeping investigations of the Bush administration’s censorship and suppression” of federal research into global warming.

He said the investigations “will uncover internal documents and agency correspondence that may expose widespread misconduct.” He added, “Taxpayers do not fund scientific research so the Bush White House can alter it.”

In February, House Science Chairman Sherwood Boehlert (R-N.Y.) and other congressional leaders asked NASA to guarantee scientific openness. They complained that a public affairs officer changed or filtered information on global warming and the Big Bang.

The officer, George Deutsch, a political appointee, had resigned after being accused of trying to limit reporters’ access to James Hansen, a prominent NASA climate scientist, and insisting that a web designer insert the word “theory” with any mention of the Big Bang.

I’m confused as to why it has taken so long for someone to take action on this. I’ve been stunned that there hasn’t been outrage over this sooner. Forget global warning! Does anyone remember when Bush dissolved a CDC committee on the effects of lead on children after receiving the shocking conclusion that lead is bad for children. He then replaced the committee with lobbyists for Lead producing manufacturers!

Solar Sailing

Solar sail completes first crucial test – NewScientist.com

A lightweight solar sail that could one day allow spacecraft to be propelled by the power of the Sun has passed its first crucial test.

The sail, made by NASA and Alliant Techsystems (ATK), was successfully deployed and its orientation controlled in the world’s largest vacuum chamber – which mimics the space environment – it was announced on Tuesday.

NASA Is Said to Loosen Risk Standards for Shuttle

NY Times

ASA officials have loosened the standards for what constitutes an acceptable risk of damage from the kind of debris that led to the disintegration of the shuttle Columbia as it was returning from space two years ago, internal documents show.

The move has set off a debate within the agency about whether the changes are a reasonable reassessment of the hazards of flight or whether they jettison long-established rules to justify getting back to space quickly.

Experts who have seen the documents say they do not suggest that the shuttle Discovery – scheduled to lift off from Cape Canaveral, Fla., on May 22 – is unsafe, but a small but forceful minority say they worry that NASA is repeating a practice that contributed to the Columbia disaster: playing down risks to continue sending humans into space.

The documents were given to The New York Times by several NASA employees, who asked not to be named, saying they feared retribution.

Documents that had been revealed earlier showed that NASA was struggling to meet safety goals set by the independent board that investigated the Columbia accident. The new documents suggest that the agency is looking for ways to justify returning to flight even if it cannot fully meet those recommendations.

White House cuts Hubble fix-up funds

MSNBC

The White House has eliminated funding for a mission to service the Hubble Space Telescope from its 2006 budget request and directed NASA to focus solely on deorbiting the popular spacecraft at the end of its life, according to government and industry sources.

Seems to me the Hubble has done more for the space program than almost any of our other expenditures. I for one would like to see the Hubble’s use continued. Is W’s asinine plan to take us to Mars still in effect? Are we actually wasting money on that? I’m still unclear as to why we are determined to continue the Space Shuttle program at all when we all know that manned space flight is unnecessarily expensive and dangerous. We should be focusing on robotics to provide a boom to that industry. Plus, it is likely to cost far less than launching/recovering re-usable manned shuttles.

Huygens beams back first discoveries from Titan

New Scientist Breaking News

The robot probe Huygens has beamed its first discoveries back to Earth, after successfully landing on Saturn’s giant moon, Titan.

The first actual data from the European Space Agency’s Huygens probe, relayed via NASA’s Cassini spacecraft, reached ESA’s control centre in Darmstadt, Germany, at 1618 GMT, prompting cheers and embraces in the control room.

“We are the first visitors of Titan,” said Jean-Jacques Dourdain, ESA’s director general. “The scientific data we are collecting now will unveil the secrets of this new world.”

NASA Salutes Successful Huygens Probe

“The descent through Titan’s atmosphere and down to its surface appeared to be perfect,” Administrator O’Keefe said. “We congratulate ESA for their spectacular success.”

Another small step in W’s plan to populate and exploit the moon. First other planet’s moons and then our own.

The deadly Asian earthquake may have permanently accelerated the Earth’s rotation — shortening days by a fraction of a second — and caused the planet to wobble on its axis, U.S. scientists said on Tuesday.

Richard Gross, a geophysicist with NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California, theorized that a shift of mass toward the Earth’s center during the quake on Sunday caused the planet to spin 3 microseconds, or 3 millionths of a second, faster and to tilt about an inch on its axis.

When one huge tectonic plate beneath the Indian Ocean was forced below the edge of another “it had the effect of making the Earth more compact and spinning faster,” Gross said.

I’ve migrated my personal blog back to a self-hosted installation of WordPress at Dreamhost.
