Run Tara Run!!

Tara is running the San Diego Rock & Roll Marathon again in a couple weeks (Sunday June 6). We’ve arranged a baby sitter so I can bike along the route (not the actual route mind you) and cheer her on.  I’ve now designed and ordered my riding shirt.

Run Tara Run!! Feel free to order your own. I make it available without markup. ;-)

Berkeley

I’m in the Bay Area for work (several meetings and the Open Source Business Conference). Since I’m here for the entire week I brought the entire family along. We’re staying in Berkeley because we have friends here.

Husband

Tara, my wife, has been hassling me about my tagline not including “husband”. It’s official. I’m a husband.

Distributed open source dad, husband, technology punk and digital viking.

10 years of marriage. :-)

Interwebs dig pregnant chicks

When I post a photo to Flickr ~10 views in the first 12 hours is pretty good. I posted this photo of Tara last night:

And it racks up 150 unique views in the first 12 hours. What the hell? I know she’s hot, but is there that many people on the Interwebs with prego fetishes?

By the by, Tara is 7 months pregnant with my son: Roesevelt David Fulkerson. I snapped this photo a few days ago after Tara’s morning run. Yes, she runs and yes. it does get a lot of looks through Mission Hills and Hillcrest.

Valentine's Day

Tara and I celebrated a late V-day tonight. I know I’m supposed to say “Tara and me”, but I prefer to say “Tara and I” so piss off. We did a late V-day because getting a babysitter on V-day is challenging. I had a great time tonight, but the best part of V-day was taking Ashby out yesterday. Look at this:

Ashby Julia

And this:

Ashby Julia

Need I say more? Other than rainbow legs rule.

Ashby was so happy to go out for V-day with her daddy. She felt so special and pretty in her V-day outfit. I wish I could help her feel this way everyday until her last.

Tara and I took Ashby for some bangers and chips at Shakespeare’s pub. She was most pleased to be with her daddy in her heart outfit and sandals that Mi-Mi (grandma) supplied her. Tonight T and I went to a pleasant Lebanese restaurant and then went out for drinks. Ashby was with Michelle, our babysitter, whom she really loves. I just checked on her sleeping in her heart pajamas. So sweet…

50 Photos | Are You Interested?

50 Photos | Are You Interested?Carrer de la Força by Toni Verdú Carbó
Nate has come up with this fantastic idea to print a photo book of 50 carefully selected photos from various talented photographers whom have released their photos under permissive Creative Commons licenses.

Details:

  • Price: about $80 or so.
  • Photos/Photographers: There’s a list of them on the photographers page
  • The Beauty: Each photo was chosen specifically for this issue’s theme, “Old”. These photographers are outstanding, and typically charge nothing to use their photos.
  • The Cause: Each photographer will, for probably the first time, receive $1 per photo per book. The limited-run of printing only 50 books guarantees a rarity. The idea behind this project is to simply give credit and validation to these brilliant photographers.
  • Sharing (The Story): These books will hopefully be a talking point around your coffee tables. Share the story of how these books were created and behind each photograph.

Excellent! $80. Ok. This might be a hard sell for Tara, my wife. What’s the details on the book? Binding, etc? Will this be unique too?

Map my vacation, please?

If someone wants to make a useful “Web 2.0″ application I’ve got a cool idea for you. Make it really easy for me to map my trip route, then with drag-and-drop ease place my Flickr photos on the map, add notes, and save the map in a re-usable format (KML, I guess). As a ‘++’ make it easy for me to review stuff along the way. Oh, and make each component in decomposable, clean re-usable formats (atom, kml, hReview, etc).

I just got home from a week long vacation with Ashby and Tara. Of course, we took photos the whole time. Every day I shot a dozen or so photos to Flickr and Facebook from my iPhone. I was moblogging so much in fact that Brett sent me this hilarious plea for assistance in makinig my moblogging less noisy in Facebook. He said he loved me, but I had turned his Facebook into the Fulkersonbook. Check out Brett’s Facebook news view:

Fulkersonbook (by Roebot)

OMFG, ridiculous. I thought Facebook provided a digest of these things! Apparently adjusting the Notes feed slider in facebook doesn’t effect the mobile notes. Facebook needs to fix this. Anyway, I felt like a spammer. I’m shocked no one else has complained. I suspect you’ve all just blacklisted me. ;-) Well, I couldn’t figure out a way to prevent my moblogging from being so noisy so I cut back on moblogging to facebook and now I shoot most of my photos to Flickr only. Back to my cool idea.

Prior to leaving for my vacation I mapped the route. Along the route I shot photos using my digital camera and my iPhone. The latter, as mentioned, I sent directly to Flickr and Facebook with the occasional note. The bulk of the photos didn’t get uploaded until I got home. Upon my return I wanted to blog about the trip and I thought a cool thing would be to provide a map with:

  • trip route
  • replete with geotagged photos
  • , notes
  • and maybe even some reviews.

We packed groceries and didn’t eat out much, but it would be cool if I had provided the occasional hReview of the few restaurants we did stop in as well as of the campground we split from in favor of a crappy motel room that had a great view in Morro Bay. If it were easy to generate hReviews I would do it more often. Especially if I could do it on the spot.

One could fulfill my dream by mashing a few services from different providers. Google Mapes, Flickr, Big Tribe… By providing some connective tissue it shouldn’t be too hard to come up with something really useful. All weekend I’ve scoured the Internet for an easy way to do this and every service I’ve found either doesn’t meet the aforementioned requirements or is too time consuming. What I found was that Greasemonkey scripts can make geotagging photos easier, but I can not find a way to easily map photos, with notes, and route. I think I found a way to do this by paying, but this service was borderline unusable, and I’m still not clear how easy it was to map routes, or if I could. I also had to re-upload my photos instead of using those on Flickr. Lame. Also, there was a fee and I’m not going to pay until I know it works. Then I might pay Flickr prices. Other alternatives didn’t allow me to display only my stuff and again routes were an issue. The only option that did allow me to do everything I wanted, I think, was such a pain the ass I’m not going to do it. It involved Greasemonkey scripts, Google Earth, and some serious hackery. I don’t have time for that!

Optimally I would have a service that I could use to map my trip. While traveling I could map photos based on my location. Use a mobile app for creating reviews along the way; otherwise I probably won’t review. And then I could polish it all off with additional photos when I get home. This would be killer, right?

Dopplr or some of these other travel services should implement this. I would then actually want to use the service. Currently I can’t possibly muster the time or energy to waste. Mind you, I’m the target audience for services like this being I typically travel a couple times a month for work.

Oh, here’s my vacation photos. I suspect this blog post is the closest I’m going to come to realizing my dream of a digital vacation scrap book with a map interface. :-(

Powerpoint is lame, Craig Newmark kicks ass

I just attended a keynote from this this guy Ben McConnell. His Powerpoint was killer! It was exactly what PPT should be. The slides were emotional or visual reinforcements of what he was talking about. Every 2nd or 3rd slide had text, but rarely did a slide exceed 5-7 words of text and the most text I saw was about 11 words. Very impactful. I had to split out early because Roy, who is sitting outside of sessions hurriedly finishing off the product we’re launching tomorrow, notified me he was sitting across from Craig Newmark. So, I rushed out to get a photo with Craig and thank him for his product and not sellng/cashing out. True to form, Craig was responding to support requests from Craigslist users, but was willing to pause for a moment and take a photo with Roy and I:

I’m pissed I didn’t think to have us face the light. Damnit, bad photo! Anyway, Craig is more handsome in person! At first I wasn’t sure it was him. LOL. Newmark kicks ass.

Here a some shots of the hotel. The arcitecture is stunning and designed to reflect the mountains. I wish Tara and Ashby were here sitting by the pool.

Tijuana, Mexico

We didn’t catch a donkey show, but we were in Tijuana, Mexico and did see a Zedonk (photographic evidence below). That’s right, we drove across the border into Mexico. It was fun. My Spanish sucks. We went to some crappy mall initially, of course, don’t take my word on this because I think all malls are crappy. My mother asked some clerk, who barely spoke English, "where do the locals shop". The woman seemed confused and surprised. I know enough Spanish to know the woman was trying to figure out why my mother was asking: "where do the crazies shop" (locals sounds like locos and locos could mean crazies) and I helped clarify the question. She directed us to Via Revolucion, which definitely is not a shopping center frequented by locals and is definitely commonly trafficked by tourists, but it is a colorful strip to walk and shop. And I suspect one could get raging drunk at discos or one of the many strip clubs that line the road were they inclined.

I was unclear how to get to Via Revolucion from the mall. While on the way I asked some police officers I had pulled up next to at a stop light for directions. All the windows of the squad car were rolled down. There were three officers (two men and one woman) in the front seat and three very hip looking criminals in the back seat that had long hair and one wore funky sun glasses. The three cops were super friendly. They conferred amongst themselves and directed me to the next circle, down the road to the left for four or five blocks a right, a left, and another right onto Via Revolucion. I asked for clarification on one of the street’s names (we were speaking Spanish and I didn’t catch the name) and they insisted I follow them instead. I couldn’t believe it. these three cops where going to lead me to the road while transporting criminals! I love Mexico. Anyway, it gets better. In Tijuana they have these crazy traffic circles. it reminds me of Napoli, Itallia. It’s total chaos. While we were navigating the circle our police friends used their sirens to break up the traffic so we could follow them more easily! Unbelievable. Mexico rules. The color. The noise. The people. It’s wonderful.

On Via Revolucion we bought a couple bottles of great tequila: El Jimador Anejo and Centenario Anejo. Both are 100% agave and, in case you didn’t know, anejo (old) means it’s been aged for three years. Also, we bought some bracelets and a couple rings. It’s Tara’s birthday on Sunday, February 11th. If you’re shopping for jewelery in Tijuana and you’re frequenting the touristy sections of town you’ll want to go to El Dorado on Via Revolucion. They actually even have an, albeit crappy, website. Tell them Aaron sent you. ;-) Romulo and Ricardo are the proprietors. Romulo is the silver smith. He’s been making jewelry for 28 years. These guys were great. They were [seemed to be] sincere. They also had the best quality jewelry that we saw and as it turns out many other vendors carry Romulo’s work in their stalls. Some vendors had low quality silver, what I was later told, by Romulo, fake gold, and plastic beads they were passing off as stone. Not that I’m into gold, but I do like stone beads.

Coming back into the United States only took us an hour. Ricardo from El Dorado gave me the advice to always stay in the far right lane when exiting Mexico. I followed this advice and it saved us probably 45 mintues. The trip was loads of fun and I look forward to returning.

Las Vegas, Nevada

Out of the mountains of Colorado, into Utah, a sliver of Arizona, and onto Nevada. Tara and I escaped the snow covered ground for the debauchery of Vegas. We hit the road before sunrise because our room in the Ramada Inn stunk of stale cigarette smoke. I woke up in the morning and coughed out something I hadn’t seen since I quit smoking three years earlier. We would have changed rooms, but Ashby was so tapped out, as were we, we didn’t bother. Also, we figured the next non-smoking room was likely going to be as smokey.

We watched the sun break the over the Rockies as we neared Grand Junction. The scenery was stunning. An hour or so into Utah we came across some of the most amazing mountains you’ll ever see, they looked as if the wind had blown them on their side. We stopped at a viewing area to take some photos. Turns out at this viewing area I was standing atop rocks from the Permian extinction that have been thrust upward and exposed. I was standing on rocks were from about 250 Million years ago when the greatest global extinction known to man occurred. It’s beleived that volcanic eruptions in Siberia 251 million years ago began a series of of events that lead to high hydrogen sulfide levels in the oceans and atmosphere and precipitating the largest mass extinction in Earth’s history. During this extinction 95 percent of all species on Earth became extinct, compared to only 75 percent of all species in the next major extinction, which is theorized to be when a large asteroid caused the dinosaurs to disappear. When you read up on the Permian extinction it’s a little terrifying. It all with a little global warming. It was all downhill after that. Sound familiar?

After Utah on highway 15 we passed through a small piece of Arizona, about 20 to 30 miles. This was some of the most spectacular scenery of the entire trip. White River Canyon in Colorado was amazing, but this too was brilliant. The section is the Virgin River Gorge. I found this page that describes the highway segment by segment in great detail, very cool. After the gorge you roll out into the desert of Nevada. We were in Las Vegas before 5 PM.

After initially booking a place at the MGM Grand I realized there was no way I could easily slip the cats past the door men. None of the hotels on the strip take cats so we ended up at a La Quinta about a half mile off the strip. After getting the car unloaded for the night we headed for the nearest buffet. Unfortunately it happened to be Excalibur, which sucked. While Tara was with Ashby I played the 3 dollars I promised our renter in a slot machine. He lost. Then I dropped 20 bucks into another machine on my way to catch up with Tara and Ashby. About three minutes later I walked away with $47.75. I broke Las Vegas!! WoooOOOOooo!

Adiós Otra Vez Duluth

I’m overdue for a family update. First, turns out Tara is 50% Wonder Woman and 55% Hulk (see comments), BrwaaAAAaaa! Last weekend we headed north for our last visit to Duluth before our move. Tara had a chance to spend some time with her mother and I stopped by Scenic Cafe for coffee and a couple Guinness (in that order). Tara was happy to see the in-laws and their undead rat dog. On the topic of Scenic Cafe, if you are looking for dining on the North Shore of Lake Superior this is the place to go. Disclosure: my buddy Scott owns it. Scott is an amazing chef. The place is funky and fun. The menu is eclectic. It has great beer, wine, and coffee, and the food is even better. Plus it is on Lake Superior (between Duluth and Two Harbors).

Ashby is really diggin’ her forts. We set up a blanket and pillow fort in the family room and she goes crazy with excitement! Evidence below. The only other event of significance to report is that we’ve sold the Accord. It’s great to be down to one car. I really looking forward to the office being two blocks from home as it will be in San Diego. I won’t have to drive, less waste! Work has been a tad painful as my office in MN winds down and the office in CA winds up. With all the odds and ends Tara and I have been managing I’m especially out of touch of with work. Living downtown San Diego is going to be different. I know Tara and Ashby are going to love it. Take today for example. It is butt ass cold and snowing outside. Tara and Ashby are trapped in the house all day. Something as simple as going to the store is a huge undertaking and, at best, a two hour ordeal. In San Diego it’s 50-something F. There is a play ground a few blocks away. They can go a couple blocks away for coffee. Walk along the harbor. Go to the zoo. Head out to the beach. Catch a donkey show in TJ, you know whatever. :-)

I was planning a going-away party for myself last week. Pathetic, I know. As I sifted through my address book it occurred to me that I’ve pissed off a lot of people in this state. Sure some were people I had to fire, or instilled with a desire to quit. Then there was a raft of contractors that I had the misfortune of working with. From the incompetent to the criminal. My favorite contractor in Minnesota was definitely the graphic design firm that incorporated another company’s trademarked logo into the design they sold us. At first they claimed it wasn’t a trademarked logo, but instead a generic graphic. Then they asserted that it was our fault because it was just a place holder image in the design and they never intended for it to be part of the design. That was awesome. And then of course there were droves of people in technology organizations that I suppose I offended by being very vocal and maybe occasionally rude. So, I’m opinionated and I don’t suffer fools lightly. Is that bad? At least you know what I think. Most of my offenses come from me being very candid. I do not like to waste time on prancing about issues and I tend to be pretty direct with my opinions. Don’t get me wrong. I always respect others’ opinions. I appreciate hearing them in fact. Indeed, I find it difficult to deal with people who obfuscate their emotions or are unwilling to candidly share their opinions. It’s painfully frustrating for me. I think this is why I’ve always loved Italy. Southern Italy especially. They scream, they yell. You know what they think even if you don’t speak their language. I like that. As for work, I’ll admit I’m pretty demanding. I know Pete’s woman said something to him when he decided to come work with me along the lines of: are you sure, you know Aaron is impossibly demanding…or something like that. I know I can be difficult to work with, or be married to (for different reasons though I believe). I think it’s because I’m passionate about what I do and I tend to demand a lot of commitment. If you’re not fully committed to something, why do it? Just to collect a paycheck? I don’t want to share my life with people like that. Just going through the motions.

Maybe I’m being too harsh. Most people do just work for the paycheck and have no real interest in their jobs beyond that. Maybe those people are really passionate about side hobbies. Cool, go get paid doing that. You’ll probably be happier. I’m not saying these people are less worthy, I just don’t want to work with them. If you’re not all in, don’t bother, and don’t waste my time.

Ashby’s First Birthday

Ashby_1year (15)

Ashby turned one year old on Saturday, January 6. It is hard to believe she’s already one. I think back to those first three months…man…that was scary. Things are much more stable now. We’ve had so many milestones already. She got her harness off for her hip dysplasia and report that her hips are normal at about three months, which was a huge relief. Then at eight months my fears of SIDS ended because research shows SIDS drops way off at that age and is no longer an issue at one year. She crawled. She signed for the first time. She’s spoken her first word: ‘dadadada’. She led us on a wild goose chase to determine why she’s anemic. She’s walked (with the aid of a walker toy). And more. I’m glad she’s sturdier now. She’s a lot more fun now that I can ‘rastle’ with her.

For Ashby’s birthday weekend the wonderful and very talented Jj Killins (our neighbor we will surely miss after we move) took photos of Ashby again. She’s amazing. For the full photo set click “Ashby’s One Year Set” below. Tara and Brenda also took Ashby to Target to get more photos taken. I can’t stand these places though because you don’t get the digital copies. What’s the point? I want nothing to do with that; although, the photographer took some surprisingly nice shots. I prefer Jj’s though photos though. I know most photographers aren’t like Jj (meaning they don’t provide digital copies), but it’s just nonsense.

Ashby_1year (8)On Ashby’s birthday she also went to the playground, one of her most favorite things to do. I stayed at home and work. Partially because I have so much crap to do, but also because I knew if I went I would steal the show from Brenda (Tara’s mom) who doesn’t have much time left before we move. When Ashby went down for her nap Tara and Brenda did a great job decorating the kitchen. After Ashby got up we sang her happy birthday, took a ton of photos, and let her taste cake for the first time. Tara got a cake from Byerlys, this awesome grocery store chain they have in Minnesota. It’s got a great meats and cheese section. This is where I got the four different sashimi grade fish for our New Years’ Eve sushi night. Around Christmas time they have a pianist. The place is all carpeted. And they give a free cake for first birthdays! The place rules. Anyhow, Ashby stuck her finger in the cake, didn’t know what to do, I put it in her mouth, and she jerked her head back as if her finger had an electriccharge. She paused, stuck her finger in again, tasted, and concluded this was some good stuff.

Tara and I plan on getting Ashby an aquarium once we move to San Diego; so, we didn’t really get her much for Christmas. However the in-laws gave her a hippo-walker/ride-on toy that Ashby promptly stood behind and charged about the house with. Also, she received a Leap Frog console that communicates with the DVD player. She checked it out for the first time today and seemed to understand she was manipulating the TV. I’m not yet sure how successful that one will be.
