Bing.com Is Growing

While it’s still not even close to being significant relative to Google’s search traffic the traffic from Bing.com continues to grow. What is the most shocking to me is that Bing drives 364% more traffic to MindTouch.com and 10% more traffic ObLOGN.com than Yahoo! search. You read correctly, Bing drives more than three times more traffic than Yahoo! search. Bing.com Search Traffic

Linked Accounts in Facebook

I just stumbled across a brilliant feature in Facebook that allows you to link authentication from  Google, Yahoo!, MySpace, Verisign PIP, Myopenid or any other OpenId provider. Why does this matter? Well, I’m always logged into Google for my calendaring and email. Now that I’ve linked my Google account to Facebook I’m also logged in at Facebook as well.

How to?

Hello kitty

Hello Kitty turns attention to young men – Yahoo News
The cute cuddly white cat from Japans Sanrio Co., usually seen on toys and jewelry for girls and young women, will soon don T-shirts, bags, watches and other products targeting young men, company spokesman Kazuo Tohmatsu said Friday.

“We think Hello Kitty is accepted by young men as a design statement in fashion,” he said.

The feline for-men products will go on sale in Japan next month, and will be sold soon in the U.S. and other Asian nations, according to Sanrio.

The usual bubble-headed shape of Hello Kitty was slightly changed for a more rugged, cool look to appeal to men in their teens and early 20s.

For example, a picture of the cat on a $36 black T-shirt has the words, “hello kitty,” instead of the usual dots for the eyes and nose.

MindTouch – Yahoo!

Cross-post

Steve and I sat down with Jeremy Zawodny, one of Roy’s heroes, on Yahoo’s campus. MindTouch uses Yahoo! technologies extensively, we’re big fans. Specifically, we’re using YUI, CDN, Flickr API, widgets, etc…

On a personal note, I think Yahoo!, to date, has been the most adept of all the big boys in connecting and growing a Developer Network. These guys get devs and I, for one, am happy to help them evangelize their work.

This isn’t a complete MeFeed, but close enough. You get the idea. It’s a crap load of my feeds that are all Unioned to produce a MeFeed.

Wiki panel on Usability

I was in Fremont yesterday speaking on a panel hosted by the Silicon Valley Webbuilder group on wikis and usability. Jeffrey Walker, the President of of Atlassian, was there. Jeffrey has this unusual quality. I don’t know how to describe it other than the dude’s so damn like-able you just want to give him a hug. The panel moderator was LukeW. I don’t recall his last name. He’s a usability and user experience (UeX) dude who’s currently working at Yahoo!. He seemed like he might be new to wikis, but it was clear he’s a smart dude and during his, albeit a tad long, ;-) introduction to UeX he made some really good points about web forms and usability. I actually wrote down a couple things Luke said. He has a book coming out on UeX and web form design. This is his second book. I will be buying it. Like I said, smart dude. Maybe someone can post an URL to it in the comments for all of us. Bess Ho, the organizer was a trip. Very energetic, fun, and memorably dressed. She was dressed straight out of an anime, down to the sneakers. She has a fabulously original business card that she proudly declared she had designed herself. Finally, Zoli helped Bess find speakers for the event and was in attendance. Hungarians are cool. Zoli is no exception.

Halloween in the Homeland

Halloween_2006 (7)I had a couple speaking engagements in San Jose at KMWorld last week that conflicted with Halloween; so, rather than missing Ashby’s first Halloween, Tara and Ashby headed out to San Jose with me. It was great to have them there. We spent the entire week at my sister’s house, Julie, in Atherton. It would be wonderful if Tara and I could live the rest of our lives without ever being separate for an entire day. Tara read somewhere this is how Paul and Linda McCartney lived. That would be fantastic. Anyhow, it was great for Ashby to see her cousins again: Skylar and Owen. We were out there in June for at least a few days; so, it wasn’t their first time together, but now that Ashby is older she was able to really engage them.

Ashby really digs traveling. She is so into it, it’s a riot. She just has the time of her life at the airport, on the plane, strolling about in public from place to place. I think she thinks she is the queen of the parade or something. She just loves it! This girl loves to be on the go. This was the third time Halloween_2006 (13) she has flown since being born. The first time we flew to North Carolina so I could speak at UNC, then, as I said, we were in California last June (Tom Tran’s wedding), and now this Halloween trip. She’ll likely fly again this year to San Diego. More on that later.

Tara and Ashby spent all day at Julie and Paul’s while I went into San Jose to work from the hotel was holed up at: Hotel Montgomery, a snazzy and affordable hotel just a couple blocks from the McEnery Convention Center where KMWorld was being held. For some bizarre reason my sister’s place doesn’t have WiFi with broadband. I have no idea what’s up with that considering Julie is a Publisher for a major technology media company. It’s always strange going back to the valley. It definitely feels like home. As soon as I step off the plane the smell hits me and I immediately know I’m back to the homeland. Maybe that’s my kind of pollution. I don’t know. There is something comforting about the urban sprawl, the rolling foothills, and good Asian food on every corner. I guess you can go home.

Tara and I got out for sushi twice the week we were there. Living in Minnesota we don’t get many chances to get decent food…I mean Asian food. In case you didn’t know: Swedes, Norwegians, and Irish don’t have the most diverse palletes. We went to Bonsai in Redwood City off El Camino on Monday while Julie and Paul monitored Ashby while she slept, which had totally shitty service and ‘ok’ food. Then later in the week we took Ashby to some sushi place in Palo Alto that, oddly enough, Tara had been to once previously a couple years ago with her mother. Odd coincidence. This place was pretty good. Ashby ate rice for the first time, she loved it, and, as usual, had a gay ol’ time with us. She really gets a thrill about being on the go.

Halloween_2006 (20)

I spoke on Tuesday about wikis being the future of Knowledge Management and then on Wednesday I spoke about business/enterprise wikis and features and attributes to consider when selecting a wiki. I wrote briefly about this at my OpenGarden.org blog, which reminds me: I need to publish my PPTs up there. In general, I’m sorry to say, I think KMWorld is lame. Mainly because the Halloween_2006 (23)organizers were just so damn disorganized. Just to give you some idea: it took me 15-20 minutes, 5people and three trips to figure out that I needed another ribbon on my badge to get me into the exhibition hall. Also, they misplaced Joel Waterman (Program Director, Enterprise Search Solutions, IBM) and I in the ‘collaboration’ track and totally boffed the description for our presentation.

I was stunned to see TheBrain there. Apparently they’ve been at KMWorld every year since 2000. It’s weird because I remember this software application like 6 or 7 years ago. It’s a mind map based personal information manager. I remember when I first saw it I was so impressed by the interface. Strangely the interface hasn’t changed since I first saw it–six years ago. It looks old. It’s kind of like when you see furniture from the 1980′s…not pretty. Not exactly a classic. I look at some of these bubbly Web 2.0 interfaces and I just know it’s going to be the same thing a few years from now. We’re going to look back at them and wonder what the hell was everyone was smoking. Just because we can make everything clickable, draggable, with rounded edges and primary colors doesn’t me should. San Jose

Then there was Halloween. Wwwwweeeeeeee!! This was so much fun! I hauled ass back to Julie’s house after my presentation on Wednesday just in time to catch everyone geared up and ready to go trick-or-treating. Ashby was, as you can see, dressed as a Lady Bug from hell. Ok, so I said she was from hell for creep factor. It didn’t work well. I grabbed the only costume I had at my disposal in 5 minutes and we headed out. It was awesome! Ashby was totally into it. We went a couple miles away from Julie and Paul’s place and met up with a mob of children, and their parents, that Julie and Paul know. Tara and I made it out to about a dozen houses before heading home early to get Ashby to bed.

On Thursday, Paul and I went to a San Jose Sharks game. I had never been to a hockey game. It was a blast! Paul got us some killer seats: eighth row center. Other than Mark, the very big and clearly mentally impaired dude in the seat next to who kept crowding me and periodically dropping peanuts into my beer it was great. Hockey is loads of fun live. San_Jose_Sharks (32)Sharks lost 1-2 to the Rangers.

Friday, we convened the: "Phase 2 of Establish Global Dominance" meeting with several of the MindTouch core team. MUHAHAHAHA!!! The next 6 months are going to be very exciting.

Finally, on Saturday we had brunch in Las Altos (Las Altos Cafe–good) with Josh Branscomb. An old buddy of mine that I graduated from UNC with. We did our senior project together. He’s pretty cool, for a Republican. Josh actually helped forge MindTouch waaaaaay back when it was still just an idea, before there were even other Wiki companies out there. In fact, he really was a founder. Instead of continuing with MindTouch he decided to go to Stanford Law School to get his law-monkey certification. He’s doing great though. He spent last Summer in D.C. and he’ll be working with Wilson and Sonsini this summer. In case you didn’t know, this is probably the most well respected technology focused law firm in the country. They represent Google, Yahoo, and perhaps the most impressive client: MindTouch!

Kevin Sites in the Hot Zone From Yahoo! News

Yahoo starts reporting.

One of the world’s most respected war correspondents, Kevin Sites has spent the past five years covering global war and disaster for several national TV networks. Now he joins Yahoo! News to provide a unique, multimedia perspective on some of the world’s most troubled and dangerous places.

This is the same dude who ignited a firestorm for reporting the killing of an unarmed Iraqi in Fallujah by an American soldier.

When Yahoo isn’t assisting in the persecution of political dissidents in China it seems they are breaking new ground in news reporting it seems.

The Kevin Sites Blog has some interesting bytes.

Cats use fax as toilet and spark house fire

Yahoo

TOKYO (Reuters) – Two kittens picked the wrong place to relieve themselves when they urinated on a fax machine, sparking a fire that extensively damaged their Japanese owner’s house.

Investigators in the western city of Kobe have concluded that the fire in January was caused by a spark generated when the urine soaked the machine’s electrical printing mechanism.

The fire damaged the kitchen and living room before it was put out by the house’s owner, who was treated for mild smoke inhalation, said Masahito Oyabu, a fireman at the Nagata fire station in central Kobe.

The kittens quickly ran to safety, he added.

“If you have a cat, or a dog for that matter, be careful where they urinate,” Oyabu said. “Especially keep them away from electrical appliances and wires.”

Remember this well, Aaron.

Firefox Search Bars

Two new search bars released for Firefox:
download Clusty Toolbar for Firefox here and download Yahoo! Toolbar here. I suppose this is telling about the growing popularity of Firefox. I checked out Clusty as a search engine and it is a pretty slick concept. That side bar is pretty useful even if it isn’t 100%. Check it out.

Gates foundation injects 750 million dollars for infant vaccination

Yahoo

GENEVA (AFP) – The foundation run by American computer software multi-billionaire Bill Gates (news – web sites) is to donate 750 million dollars (575 million euros) over 10 years for worldwide infant vaccination.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (news – web sites) said the money would go to the Geneva-based Global Alliance for Vaccination and Immunisation (GAVI), a partner of the World Health Organisation.

“In just five years, GAVIs efforts have saved hundreds of thousands of childrens lives, and its work in the coming years will save millions more,” said Bill Gates, founder and president of the software giant Microsoft.

“GAVI will use the funds announced today to support national immunization programs in 72 of the worlds poorest countries,” he said in a statement. “Supporting childrens immunization is undoubtedly the best investment weve ever made.”

“These large contributions will help save the lives of hundreds of thousands of people and prevent immense suffering and disability over the coming years,” said Dr Jong-wook Lee, WHO Director-General and GAVI chairman.

In its less than five years of existence GAVI has been responsible for the vaccination of some 54 million children against diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, hepatitis B, influenza type B, and yellow fever.

People may have things to say about his business policies and products, but this is undoubtedly a good thing for everyone.
